Marc Marquez was rolling back the years at COTA, as he assumed the lead after a feisty battle with Acosta.
The Spaniard was in fine form and looked to be the fastest Ducati on track and with eventual winner Maverick Vinales coming far back down the field, Marquez looked to be in a great position to win his first race with Ducati but an issue with the front brakes resulted in Marquez losing the front at turn 11.
The eight-time world champion felt that even before the crash, he was struggling with the front brakes…
“Yeah, of course we are disappointed but we cannot change the situation now,” said Marc Marquez when speaking to TNT Sport. “Just take the positive things that we were fighting here for the victory.”
“I was struggling quite a lot during the race with that front brake. I didn’t know what was going on but I was struggling a lot and then I was trying to lead the race to see if it was improving.”
“But at least when I arrived on that turn 11, I braked the first time, no issues were there. And then I braked two or three times and that’s when I lost the front.”
“But yeah, it’s a shame because today the pace was there. But let’s see, we take the positive of the weekend and think about Jerez.”
Despite yet another disappointing end to a Sunday race, there are many positives to look into for Marc Marquez, who once again looks to be a step closer to the leading group.
“The best thing was to try to be positive and this even gives you a bit of feedback. But at least we were fighting with the top group for the first time in the race. So let’s see if we can keep improving for the next race.”
TNT Sport’s commentator Neil Hodgeson also noticed that Marquez’s crash felt a bit strange and felt that it might have something to do with the front brake issues, as Marc suggested:
“It was a little bit weird, and I’m like, he crashed really early there, ” said the 2003 World Superbike World Champion. “And then he clearly had an issue with the brake, and we were just talking about it when we were listening to the interview.”
“A couple of his moves, I don’t think he wanted, but if you’ve got a slight front brake issue, the lever’s not exactly where you want it to be, it can cause that [crash].”
“So he’ll be relatively happy, he now knows why he’s crashed. And that’s in the past, but there’s lots of positives at the time he’s leading the race. He’s a top Ducati on the old bike, so yeah. You know what Marc’s like, you extract every positive from that incident.”
