Nicolo Bulega wins his debut race in Phillip Island after fending off attacks from Iannone and Lowes early on. Yamaha’s Andrea Locatelli would go on to finish second after a successful gamble to pit later than the lead group. Iannone would make it two rookies on the podium after spending four years outside of racing.
Nicolo Bulega started from pole position after being the first rider to break into the 1’27s lap time but it was GoEleven Ducati’s Andrea Iannone who took the holeshot followed by a fast starting Alvaro Bautista from ninth on the grid. Lowes and Razgatlioglu slotted in third and fourth respectively after bullying Bulega to fifth.
Kawasaki’s Alex Lowes then went past Bautista in turn two before overtaking Andrea Iannone at the Lukey Heights. Andrea Iannone however, would respond back immediately by re-overtaking Lowes down Gardner straight. Meanwhile Toprak Razgatlioglu also made his move on Bautista down the straight showing that BMW is no joke when it comes to straight line speed.
Nicolo Bulega then decides to pull the trigger on lap 3, going past teammate Alvaro Bautista and doing a quick one on Toprak Razgatlioglu in the MG corner. Meanwhile, after getting passed by Nicolo Bulega, Bautista did get offset exposing himself to an attack from the Marc VDS of Sam Lowes who pushed Bautista wide, resulting in the Spaniard dropping down to tenth place.
Bautista would then try to claw his way back, only to crash at the MG corner after an audacious attempt on the Kawasaki of Axel Bassani.
On lap 6, Bulega would then make a move on Lowes for second place at the MG corner before making quick work of Iannone for the lead in Gardner straight, on lap 7.
Alex Lowes would follow Bulega to get closer to Iannone before making his pass on Iannone on the MG corner on the same lap Bulega took the lead. Iannone would then repass Lowes in the Doohan corner.
Lap nine would see pit window open for a tyre change and Bulega, Iannone, Lowes, and Razgatlioglu would make their pitstops leaving Andrea Locatelli in the lead.
Toprak Razgatlioglu got the jump on the three riders ahead in the pitstop but had to let go of the Bulea and Lowes ahead for speeding in the pitlane and would later receive a time penalty of 1.2 seconds for intervention with the time infraction.Toprak would however respond by overtaking Lowes on lap 10.
Iannone lost out to Lowes and Razgatlioglu in the pit stops but would find himself re-overtaking Lowes and Razgatlioglu on lap seven.
By this time, Nicolo Bulega was already 4 seconds clear of the field and wouldn’t see a wheel ahead of since.
Meanwhile, lap 11 saw Andrea Locatelli make his pitstop. The Italian found himself slotting in fifth place right behind Toprak Razgatlioglu but with two lap fresher tyres, the Italian made light work of the Turk.
With seven laps to go Andrea Locatelli would then get past Lowes for third on Miller corner and would go on to do the same to Andrea Iannone a lap later.
This is the order in which the race will be concluded, with Nicolo Bulega taking his maiden World Superbike victory after a dominant performance imitating that of Alvaro Bautista from 2019. Andrea Locatelli would finish 2.2 seconds down in second and Andrea Iannone would make it two rookies on the podium.
With the time penalty being implemented for Toprak Razgatlioglu, he would find himself in fifth place behind Alex Lowes.
After remounting, Bautista would go on to finish in fifteenth place but it was horror show for Jonathan Rea who endured a nightmare start to his season in blue finishing in seventeenth place.
